Another McCandles type can be seen in Chapter 11. Lorean Johnson, Chris's grandfather, is very similiar to Chris. First of all, they are related to one another. Lorean Johnson is Billie McCandles's father. Like Chris, Lorean loved nature and animals. He would take cityfolk who decided to go hunting on hunting expeiditons, and he promised the group of hunters that they would at least get a deer. Since most of these city men were drunk and had bad shots, Lorean had a shot a deer for them. He hated it. He would cry when he shot a deer. Furthermore, Lorean also had to somewhat live off the wild. To feed his family, he would have to kill deer for meat. Chris also had to kill animals to eat while living in the wild. Another characteristic that Chris and Lorean share is never keeping the same job for a long time. Chris worked for a few people on his journey. He never really worked for someone for a constant long period of time. For example, when he worked for Wayne Westenberg, he would work for a few months, then he would leave and eventually come back. Furthermore, Lorean Johnson didn't admire the cityfolk and their lifestyle; Chris felt the same about this too.
Carine McCandles is another McCandles type. Chris and Carine look very similiar. Strangers and other people would sometimes mistake them for twins. Furthermore, both of them clashed with their parents. Also, Chris and Carine both didn't like the fact that their parents work a lot, so they became very close. Carine also shares a few of the same characteristics as Chris. She is energectic, self assured, a high achiever, and quick to state an opinion. Another interesting thing that both of them shared was musical talent. Both of them played the French horn, but Carine eventually became better than Chris.
Another person Chris was similiar to was his own father, Walt McCandles. Walt and Chris were both entaprueners at one point in their lifetime. Walt started his own successful business with his wife while Chris made money by selling homegrown vegetables door to door as a toddler. Similiar to Chris, Walt took some of his challenges head on; however, he knew his limits and had more common sense than Chris. Furthermore, both Chris and Walt had a sense to go hiking a lot. Walt had flaws that Chris couldn't simply look over. He found out about Walt's other marriage and that he kept it going for a few years after his divorce. Chris however could look over London's drinking obecession and Tolstoy's sex addiction. Chris looked up to the author's by their works not their lives.
